Bedding Bedspreads manufacturing has a long history. The original pattern for what is now known as the George Washington bedspread is several thousand years old. This pattern was originally developed in the old world by hand weavers.
George Washington chose this pattern for his bride Martha Washington. The pattern was lost for time due to the textile industry being mechanized in the eighteenth century and replaced the skilled hand weavers before industrialization.
In 1850 the Bates Mill Company was formed in Lewiston Maine. This company recaptured the pattern weave we know today as the Martha Washington bedspread, and manufactured it on the then new modern textile machines of the day.
Today this pattern is woven in Lewiston Maine by a company formed from former Bates employees. They continue to manufacture this elegant bedspread on the same machinery used by the former Bates manufacturing company.
The Martha Washington bedspread is woven of the finest materials. The bedspread is preshrunk and is machine washable. It comes in all the usual bed sizes of twin, full, queen and king sizes and features a luxurious string fringe. Coverlets of the Martha Washington weave feature a pom-pom fringe. Each bedspread is manufactured of 100% cotton. They are woven in a luxurious candlewick terry construction and come in white or antique white colors.
