Are the bedspreads you sell machine washable?

Most of  our bedspreads and coverlets are machine washable. Always check the label for cleaning instructions. You will need a washing machine with a large capacity tub because of the size of the bedspreads. They should be washed in warm water and on a gentle cycle. Never use bleach or a detergent with bleach additive when washing. It is recommended to dry them on a low heat setting and remove from the dryer promptly to avoid wrinkling.

How much shrinkage will your bedspreads or coverlets have after washing?

Generally you should not expect more than two percent shrinkage, if any, after washing on a gentle cycle and drying on a low heat setting. All our products are pre-shrunk and therefore usually no further shrinkage occurs.

Is it possible to order custom size bedspreads from you?

Custom sizes are available on request at an additional cost from some but not all manufacturers. Please note custom ordered bedspreads may not be returned like standard size bedspreads. Please contact us for custom size quotes.

How long should I expect a bedspread or coverlet I purchase from you to last?

Our bedspreads should be a treasured heirloom for many years. We have had people tell us the Traditional style bedspreads we sell have been used by them for thirty years and more. They buy another bedspread not because the older one was worn out but because they want a different color or style. Depending on the style, material and how it it is used will determine how durable any product will be.

What colors do you have available in the Traditional style bedspreads?

White and Antique are the standard colors for all our Traditional bedspreads. In the Matelasse style bedspreads, two tone colors are available and include Linen, which is also known as Old Antique, French Blue on Natural, Wedgewood Blue on White, Sage on Natural and Quartz on Natural. New colors and designs are constantly being developed.

What is the difference between Terry Bedspreads and a Matelasse Bedspreads in the Traditional style bedspreads ?

The Terry Bedspread features fluffy tufts and the Matelasse is like a puffed quilt.

What are some common textile terms?

MATELASSE: A soft, double or compound fancy-woven fabric with a quilted appearance usually woven on a Jacquard loom. Our Matelasse designs include Queen Elizabeth, Abigail, Heritage and Cape Cod among others.

CANDLEWICK: Fabric woven on jacquard looms to create fluffy tufts of soft cotton yarns closely arranged in continuous lines or spaced at intervals to create a design. Often called chenille (which is a type of very soft yarn), the name candlewick refers to fabric loops as being similar in length to the "wick of a candle". Our candlewick designs are made of terry loop fabric.

CHENILLE: A very soft yarn used as filling in fabrics with a fuzzy appearance.

TERRY: A cotton fabric having uncut loops on one or both sides made on a dobby loom with a terry arrangement or on a Jacquard loom. Our Martha’s Choice bedspread is of terry construction and soft like chenille.

JACQUARD: A system of weaving using a pattern mechanism to permit the production of large, intricate designs. The weave pattern is achieved by a series of punched cards. The process is similar to the way a player piano works. Thousand of “punch cards" are required to weave one bedspread woven on a jacquard loom.

TERRY: A cotton fabric having uncut loops on one or both sides made on a dobby loom with a terry arrangement or on a Jacquard loom. Our Martha’s Choice bedspread is of terry construction and soft like chenille.

DOBBY: A mechanical attachment on a loom to create a terry bedspread.

Mattresses:

Innerspring - A flexible, thus more comfortable mattress, the innerspring is made up of a number of wire coil springs. The more springs per mattress, generally the more comfortable it will be. There are four versions of innerspring, depending on the make-up of the mattress:

Horsehair - The firmest in relative feel, horsehair mattresses are often blended with cotton felt.

Lamb's Wool - Good for extreme temperatures, lamb's wool mattresses stay cool in summer and warm in winter. The wool is often mixed with cotton felt.

Feather - Softer than both horsehair and lamb's wool, feather mattresses are typically comprised of chicken, goose, or down feathers, or a combination of the three.

Non-allergenic - For the extremely sensitve sleeper, this 100-percent cotton felt has no chemical additives.

Pillows:

Standard Pillow - Comes in soft, medium or firm. Soft is best for light support and stomach sleepers. Medium is ideal for back sleepers. Firm pillows hit the spot for side snoozers.

Decorative Pillow - Various shapes include: Eurosquare (26"x26"), King (20"x36"), Queen (20"x30"), Standard (20"x26"), Boudoir (12"x16"), and Neck roll (16" long, 5" diameter.)

Standard Sham - A decorative cover, usually for pillows that are not slept on. Use to complete the look of a bedding ensemble.

European Sham - A larger, square version of the standard sham, used to cover the Eurosquare pillow.
